Ohio Flame Fire Chalice | 30, 37 & 41

Ohio Flame Fire Chalice artisan steel fire bowl in Patina finish
The Forge · Ohio Flame Buyer Review

The Ohio Flame Fire Chalice is a tall, vessel-shaped wood-burning fire bowl from the brand’s Artisan Collection. It is currently offered in 30, 37 and 41-inch diameters, with the overall height increasing from 22.5 inches to 28 inches as you move through the range.

Quick verdict: Fire Chalice makes the most sense when you want a taller, more vertical silhouette than a conventional low fire bowl. The 30-inch version keeps the weight manageable, while the 37 and 41-inch models become much heavier permanent focal points.

What is the Fire Chalice?

Ohio Flame describes Fire Chalice as an artisan fire bowl inspired by the universal chalice form. It is designed and crafted by local artisan Matt Skillman and built from thick American carbon steel sourced from domestic mills.

As sold, it is a wood-burning fire feature with no gas burner or ignition system included. The steel develops a natural iron-oxide patina rather than relying on a painted finish.

Size Guide

30 vs. 37 vs. 41-inch Fire Chalice

The larger Fire Chalice sizes are not just wider. They are taller, deeper, heavier and made from thicker steel, so the scale of the installation changes considerably as you step up.

Diameter Overall height Bowl depth Approx. weight Steel thickness
30 in. 22.5 in. 15 in. 80 lb .148 in.
37 in. 26.5 in. 18.5 in. 214 lb .185 in.
41 in. 28 in. 20.5 in. 224 lb .203 in.
Size takeaway: the 30-inch bowl is roughly 80 pounds, but the 37-inch version jumps to approximately 214 pounds. If you are choosing either larger size, decide on placement before delivery rather than assuming the bowl will be easy to move later.
Fire Chalice vs. Fire Flower

Which artisan shape fits your space better?

Both products share Ohio Flame’s American carbon steel construction, three diameter choices, Patina finish, Rain Drain and Lifetime Warranty. The main difference is visual language.

  • Fire Chalice: taller, vessel-inspired profile that puts more emphasis on vertical presence.
  • Fire Flower: blooming, organic silhouette that reads wider and more sculptural around the rim.

If the choice is primarily aesthetic, compare the Fire Flower size guide beside this page before ordering.

Material Accuracy

Is Fire Chalice made from Corten steel?

No. Ohio Flame states that its fire pits are made from high-carbon American steel and explicitly says it does not use Corten steel.

The steel still develops a natural iron-oxide patina outdoors. Ohio Flame describes the process as beginning more orange and darkening toward brown with ongoing exposure to moisture, oxygen and heat. That changing surface is expected.

Drainage & Conversion

What is the Rain Drain for?

The Fire Chalice includes a Rain Drain to help water escape the bowl, plus a 4-inch round blocking plate with a standard-length centering tee.

Ohio Flame sells its fire pits as wood burning only and does not sell gas conversion kits. The manufacturer notes that some customers have professionally converted fire pits and that the 1-inch Rain Drain can be a convenient route for a gas-supply pipe. Ohio Flame recommends that modifications be handled by a licensed professional and disclaims liability for damage or injury from modifications.

See our Ohio Flame gas-conversion guide for the distinction between what ships from the manufacturer and what requires a separate professional project.

Made to Order

What is the current artisan production time?

Ohio Flame currently publishes a standard two-week artisan lead time from order to the product being ready to ship. Transit comes after that production period and varies by destination and carrier conditions.

Because production timing can change, use the live product page and order communication when a project has a fixed deadline.

Patina & Care

What maintenance does the steel need?

Ohio Flame’s current FAQ emphasizes simple upkeep rather than coatings or refinishing. The key task is periodically removing excessive ash and debris so trapped moisture does not sit in the bowl.

The manufacturer says its fire pits may remain outdoors year-round when the bowl is kept cleaned out. Buyers with light-colored pavers or concrete should also plan for possible rust-colored transfer from the weathering steel surface and ash around the drain area.

Placement

Where should Fire Chalice be installed?

Ohio Flame specifies outdoor, fully ventilated use on a hard, level, non-flammable surface. Its current safety guidance says not to use the fire pit on wooden decks and to keep it at least 10 feet from walls, structures or buildings.

That is manufacturer guidance, not a substitute for local fire codes or active burn restrictions. Confirm both before use.

Who It Fits

Who should choose Fire Chalice?

  • Choose the 30-inch when you want the chalice silhouette in the lightest available size.
  • Choose the 37-inch when you need a taller 26.5-inch centerpiece and are prepared for a 214-pound installation.
  • Choose the 41-inch when maximum scale is the goal and the 28-inch overall height suits the landscape.
  • Choose Fire Chalice over Liberty when artisan form and vertical presence matter more than a simpler traditional fire-pit silhouette.
  • Choose another fuel type when instant ignition and minimal ash handling are higher priorities than real wood fire.
