The Howl R3 is a portable radiant propane fire pit made in Colorado. It weighs about 20 lb, folds to 18 × 12 × 5.8 inches, and pairs a glowing BarCoal radiant tube with an open A-Flame on one knob. It's rated at 64,750 BTU/h and runs about 6 hours at full output on a 20 lb tank.
Choose the R3 for three-season trips, a compact camp setup and straightforward, single-knob operation. You get the atmosphere of a real flame without hauling firewood or cleaning out wood ash.

The included 8-foot regulator hose connects the R3 to an approved 20 lb propane cylinder, sold separately. Howl lists approximately six hours of operation at full output on a full tank.
One knob operates the radiant tube and visible flame together. That simplicity is part of the R3’s appeal. If you want to adjust flame and radiant heat independently, step up to the R4 MKII.
Runtime varies with fill level, settings and conditions. Plan fuel for your trip, and follow the manual’s lighting and leak-check procedure.
Measure the space you actually have
The GullWing legs fold into a package roughly 18 inches long, 12 inches wide and 5.8 inches high. That makes the R3 worth a close look when a larger campfire would take space needed for chairs, food or recovery gear.
The listed weight covers the fire pit, not your propane supply. Check your compartment opening as well as its internal dimensions, and leave room for the hose and tank.
What the 1,100°F figure means
It is the manufacturer’s BarCoal tube operating temperature, not the air temperature around the fire or a promised heating radius. The hot tube emits radiant energy toward nearby people and surfaces; wind, distance and seating position affect comfort.

Howl’s manual provides a lifetime limited warranty against defects in workmanship. Normal wear and damage from improper use are excluded; service for wear or damage may carry a charge. Metal construction does not mean maintenance-free. Inspect the hose and connections before use, keep burner openings clear, and follow the manual’s cleaning and storage directions. No fixed service life is promised.

Before you light it
For outdoor use only, on a suitable noncombustible surface with the clearances in the owner’s manual. Do not operate in a tent, RV, vehicle, garage, or beneath an awning or other overhead structure. These fire pits are not designed for cooking. Allow the unit to cool completely before handling or packing. Local restrictions can prohibit propane fires: confirm permission with the relevant land manager or fire authority before use.

Howl R3 vs R1?
The R1 (about 10 lb, shoebox size) is flame and light only. The R3 adds a BarCoal radiant tube that puts out warmth for three-season trips, at about twice the weight.
