Real BarCoal Heat, Packed Down to Fit Whatever You Camp Out Of

Most portable fire pits get left in the garage because packing them is a project. The R3 folds to 18 x 12 x 5.8 inches and weighs 20 pounds, so it lives in the truck bed full time. Then it throws 1,100°F of radiant heat when you unfold it.

Estimated delivery 10-16 business daysEvery R3 is built at Howl's factory in Arvada, Colorado. That window is measured from your order date and covers production plus transit. Tracking is emailed once the order ships. Call 833-777-2962 to confirm where the schedule stands today.

The steel U-tube runs at 1,100°F and emits infrared in the same frequency band as wood coals, so your body absorbs the energy directly. No smoke, no embers, and no ash to clean up.

The A-Flame throws up to 24 inches of exposed flame with a windscreen protecting the base. If a gust puts it out, it re-lights itself from the BarCoal's hot exhaust.

The legs flip out for a wide, stable footing at camp, then fold flush into the frame so the whole unit packs down tight enough to live in a drawer system.

Nothing to balance and no second regulator to carry. Unfold the legs, hook up the tank, light it, and settle in.

The Middle Howl: Serious Heat Without the Full Step Up

The R3 is built for three-season camping when the forecast is anybody's guess. It makes BarCoal radiant heat in a size small enough to live permanently in a truck, van, camper, or drawer system.

Fold the legs and it takes up about half the packed volume of the R4. That is the whole idea: serious warmth without stepping all the way up in size or in price.

No smoke, no embers, no sparks, and no ash bed to clean out. UL certified, and usable under Stage I and Stage II fire restrictions where gas appliances are allowed.

Legs folded, the R3 measures 18 x 12 x 5.8 inches.
Small enough that you actually bring it
How big is it folded?

18 x 12 x 5.8 inches with the legs in, which is smaller than a case of longnecks and roughly half the packed volume of the R4.

How light is it?

20 pounds. Light enough to carry across camp in one hand, heavy enough to take a beating on the way.

Where does it actually fit?

DECKED drawers, van garages, camper cubbies, trailer boxes, gear lockers, or whatever corner of your rig still has a little air in it.

Does it have folding legs?

Yes. The GullWing legs flip out for a steady stance at camp, then fold into the frame so the whole fire pit packs down flat and tight.

Actually warm, not just bright
Why don't normal propane fires keep you warm?

Because they only make flames. Flames heat the air around them, and hot air rises and blows out of camp, leaving you cold three feet away.

What makes a wood fire warm?

Coals. Wood coals emit infrared that your body absorbs directly, which is why a good coal bed warms you even when the air is cold and moving.

How does BarCoal keep you warm?

The steel U-tube hits 1,100°F and emits infrared at the same frequencies as wood coals. Your body absorbs those rays over time, and you warm up from the inside out rather than depending on the air.

Does more BTUs mean more heat?

No. A BTU rating tells you how much propane a unit burns, not how much warmth reaches your body. The R3 uses 64,750 BTU per hour at maximum, and the BarCoal turns that fuel into 1,100°F of radiant heat you can actually feel.

Built for three-season conditions
What does it do in strong wind?

The BarCoal's air intake is completely concealed inside the body, which keeps the combustion air path out of the gusts. The A-Flame windscreen protects the base of the flame, and it relights from the BarCoal exhaust if it blows out. You will feel the radiant heat in winds up to roughly 20 mph.

How does it work at altitude?

Air density changes as you climb, but the momentum of the BarCoal fuel jet draws in air proportionally. You get clean, complete combustion from Death Valley to Pikes Peak.

What if it rains or snows?

Both burners are self-draining. Even after days of precipitation they light right up, and if you get a surprise foot of snow overnight, brush it off and fire it up.

What is it made of?

304 stainless steel, aircraft aluminum, and brass. Design, cutting, press-braking, assembly, testing, and packaging all happen at Howl's facility in Arvada, Colorado.

Common questions
When will my R3 arrive?

Estimated delivery is 10-16 business days, measured from your order date. Units are built in sequence at Howl's Colorado factory rather than pulled from a warehouse shelf, so that window covers production plus transit. Tracking is emailed once the order ships. Call 833-777-2962 before ordering if you have a date you need to hit and we will confirm where things stand.

How does the R3 compare to the R1 and R4 MKii?

The R3 sits in the middle of the line. It runs the same BarCoal radiant burner technology as the R4 but packs down to about half the volume, so you get serious radiant output in a size that stores easily. The R1 is the smallest and lightest and is built around flame rather than radiant heat. Call us and we will match one to how you actually camp.

How long does one tank last?

Roughly 6 hours at full output on a standard 20 lb tank. Running below maximum extends that considerably. The included 8-foot regulator hose connects to a standard tank.

Can I use it during a burn ban?

The R3 is UL certified, and propane fire features are frequently permitted under Stage I and Stage II restrictions because they produce no embers or ash. Rules vary by jurisdiction and season, so confirm with your local fire authority or land management agency before use.

Is a propane tank included?

No. The R3 ships with an 8-foot regulator hose. The tank and the carry strap are sold separately.

Is there a warranty?

Scratches and dents come with the territory. If something breaks in a way that affects function, Howl repairs or replaces the affected parts at a reasonable cost. Damage determined to be a manufacturing defect is handled at Howl's discretion at no cost to you. Call us for full terms before ordering.

What about setup and safety?

Set the R3 on level, non-combustible ground and unfold both legs until they seat. Check every fitting for leaks before lighting. Keep clearance from tents, awnings, vehicles, and overhanging branches, and never move it while lit. Never operate it while mounted to a vehicle. Review the Howl manual for complete instructions.
