The Howl R4 MKII is a portable radiant propane fire pit built around two BarCoal heat tubes, a visible A-Flame and separate controls for each experience. It is the premium Howl to consider when cold-weather trips and control over your evening matter more than the smallest packed size.
Turn down the visible flame while keeping the radiant system running, or bring the flame into the scene when everyone gathers. Its folding design lets the same fire pit travel from your backyard setup to your next campsite.

See the fire before you picture the trip
A specification table tells you what fits in the vehicle. The video shows the other half of the purchase: the movement of the flame and the fire you will gather around after sunset.
Keep the chairs, the conversation and the extra layer. Leave the firewood stack and wood-ash cleanup out of the routine.
Plan fuel for a long evening
Howl lists approximately 6.5 hours at full output from a full 20 lb propane tank, with up to 10 hours depending on settings. The 8-foot regulator hose is included; the propane cylinder is not.
The separate controls let you reduce the visible A-Flame while retaining radiant heat. Howl calls the heat-without-visible-flame configuration Stargazing Mode. Follow the manual’s operating sequence.
Actual runtime depends on settings, conditions and the amount of propane in the tank. A spare fuel plan matters on longer trips.
What makes the R4 MKII the upgrade?
Two BarCoal tubes and EchoHeat reflectors form its radiant heating system. Separate heat and flame controls give you a choice the single-control R3 does not: keep the warmth while changing the light and atmosphere.
The manufacturer’s 1,300°F+ specification describes the radiant tubes, not the surrounding air or a guaranteed comfort distance. This is Howl’s four-season model, but weather, seating position and safe clearances still matter.
Substantial construction, still portable
The 12-gauge stainless PressBrake frame and folding JackKnife aluminum legs create a 27 lb unit that packs to 21 × 14.34 × 7.53 inches. You carry more than with the R3 in exchange for its larger heating system and controls.

Built to use, with service worth understanding
Howl’s manual provides a lifetime limited warranty against defects in workmanship. Normal wear and damage from improper use are excluded; service for wear or damage may carry a charge. Modification or repair by an unqualified third party can invalidate coverage. Read the model’s manual for the full terms.
Metal construction does not mean maintenance-free. Inspect the hose and connections before use, keep burner openings clear, and follow the manual’s cleaning and storage directions. No fixed service life is promised.

Is a propane tank included?
No. The fire pit and an 8-foot regulator hose are included. The propane cylinder and carry strap are sold separately.
Can I cook on it?
No. Howl’s owner’s manual says the unit is not designed for cooking or heating cookware, food or liquids.
Can I use it during a burn ban?
Only when the rules for your exact location allow this type of propane appliance. Certification is not blanket permission; check with the relevant authority before lighting it.
Does it need electricity?
No electrical supply is needed. Use the fuel connection and lighting procedure specified in the owner’s manual.
Before you light it
For outdoor use only, on a suitable noncombustible surface with the clearances in the owner’s manual. Do not operate in a tent, RV, vehicle, garage, or beneath an awning or other overhead structure. These fire pits are not designed for cooking. Allow the unit to cool completely before handling or packing. Local restrictions can prohibit propane fires: confirm permission with the relevant land manager or fire authority before use.
