The R1 folds to 13.275 x 8.43 x 6.05 inches and weighs about 10 pounds. It disappears into a drawer, a cargo box, or the last gap in a packed rig, then throws a 32-inch flame when the sun drops. Eight hours of full-blast burn on a single tank.
Made in Colorado from 304 stainless steel, aircraft aluminum, and brass. Ships with an 8-foot regulator hose. Free shipping on all orders.
A-Flame burnerTaller flames on far less fuel, fully exposed.160 precision micro-emitters produce 160 small flames that band together into one tall column. The burner plate is precision-shaped to shed water quickly, so it lights up after rain rather than sputtering.
FlexDome windscreenKeeps the flame lit without hiding it in a box.The windscreen domes upward as it heats, creating a flow that builds flame height without burning more fuel. Every inch of flame stays in view instead of sitting below a rim.
GullWing legsFlip out for a steady stance, flip in to save space.Simple, strong, and effective. The legs fold flush into the frame so the whole unit packs down to shoebox size for a drawer, a cubby, or a cargo box.
PressBrake frameA stainless exoskeleton built for dirt-road abuse. It starts as a single plate of stainless steel, cut to shape with a fiber laser, then bent to form with a hydraulic press brake. The frame protects the campfire from a dustup with a dirt road.
The R1 is built for multi-day missions in tightly packed rigs with long stretches between resupplies. Toss it in the truck, mount it to your rig, or bury it under the rest of your gear until the sun drops.
Crank it to full blast and run all night on a single tank. Or turn it down low and stretch that fuel across several days. A-Flame technology gives you taller flames on far less propane, and it keeps every inch of that flame exposed.
No smoke, no embers, no sparks, and no ash bed to clean out. UL certified, and usable in Stage I and Stage II fire restrictions where gas appliances are allowed.

About 10 pounds. Light enough to carry across camp in one hand, with a stainless frame that still takes a beating on the way there.
13.275 x 8.43 x 6.05 inches with the legs in, roughly the size of a shoebox or a six-inch stack of printer paper. Legs out, it measures 14.30 x 8.43 x 7.96 inches.
DECKED drawers, RV cubbies, van garages, Aluboxes, rooftop cargo carriers, trailer boxes. Basically any gap in a packed rig that still has a little air in it.
Yes. The GullWing legs flip out for a steady stance at camp, then fold into the frame for tight packing. No tools, no loose parts.

When the burner sits at the bottom of a box or bowl, the first several inches of flame are hidden below the rim, so you have to crank the fuel just to get flame above the walls. The R1 has no walls, so every bit of propane you burn becomes light you can actually use.
160 precision micro-emitters produce 160 tiny flames that band together and stretch upward, the same way two lighters held together make one surprisingly tall flame. Height comes from the geometry rather than from more gas.
Yes. The R1 comes with an infinitely adjustable pressure regulator, so you can dial flame height to exactly what you want, from a full-blast evening to a low burn that lasts for days.
Howl recommends a 10, 11, or 20 lb tank depending on your storage space and how far you are from the next resupply. The published 8-hour burn time is based on a 20 lb tank at full output.

There is no ash bed to clean out, no ember scatter, and nothing to douse before bed. It is easier on your gear and easier on the forest, and it means no hunting for firewood at the last gas station.
The R1 is UL certified, and propane fire features are frequently permitted under Stage I and Stage II restrictions because they produce no embers. Rules vary by jurisdiction and season, so confirm with your local fire authority or land management agency before use.
The burner plate is precision-shaped to shed water quickly, so it lights up after weather rather than sputtering. Brush it off and go.

The R1 is the smallest and lightest in the line, built around flame and light rather than radiant heat. The R3 and R4 MKii add BarCoal radiant tube burners that put out serious warmth for cold-weather camping, at more weight and more cost. If you want atmosphere and portability, the R1. If you want to stay warm in genuinely cold conditions, step up. Call us and we will match one to how you camp.
The R1 HaulBag is a padded Cordura carry bag sized for this unit, and the R1 Rally Mount is an aluminum plate that locks it to a rack, bedrail, or Molle panel. The RV Kit adds a 20-foot hose and a Y-splitter so one tank feeds two lines.
No. The R1 ships with an 8-foot regulator hose. The tank and the carry strap are sold separately.
Scratches and dents come with the territory. If something breaks in a way that affects function, Howl repairs or replaces the affected parts at a reasonable cost. Damage determined to be a manufacturing defect is handled at Howl's discretion at no cost to you. Call us for full terms before ordering.
Yes. Design, fabrication, cutting, press-braking, assembly, testing, and packaging are all done in Colorado.
Set it on level, non-combustible ground, unfold both legs until they seat, and check every fitting for leaks before lighting. Keep clearance from tents, awnings, vehicles, and overhanging branches, and never move it while lit. Never operate it while mounted to a vehicle. Review the Howl manual for complete instructions.
