What Is the Big Joe III?

Short answer

The Big Joe III is the 24-inch version of Kamado Joe's Series III ceramic grill. It offers 450 square inches on a single uninterrupted main grate, and Kamado Joe cites up to 864 square inches when all three Divide and Conquer tiers are loaded. Manufacturer heat range is 225 to 750°F.

It carries the same feature set as the Classic Joe III — SloRoller hyperbolic smoke chamber, 3-tier rack system, Kontrol Tower top vent, Air Lift hinge, stainless charcoal basket, slide-out ash drawer — in a larger body. Assembled it measures 51.6 inches wide by 55.1 inches tall and weighs 406.3 pounds.

There is a point where a good 18-inch kamado stops being the right tool. Two racks of ribs, a whole packer brisket, a turkey with sides alongside it. That is Big Joe territory, and it is worth being honest with yourself about whether you are actually in it before you commit to 400 pounds of ceramic.

Cross-shopping a Big Green Egg?

Buyers usually weigh this one against the XL EGG, and the Classic Joe III against the Large. Read Kamado Joe vs Big Green Egg for how the two brands compare on included accessories, cost of a complete setup, and published warranty terms.

Why 450 Uninterrupted Square Inches Matters

Large cuts lie flat

The number that matters on a brisket day is not the stacked total, it is the single-grate figure. 450 square inches lets a full packer lie flat, or two pork butts sit side by side without stacking. On an 18-inch grill you plan around the geometry. On this one you mostly stop thinking about it.

450 or 864? Both, depending on what you are measuring. The main cooking surface is 450 square inches. Kamado Joe cites up to 864 square inches when you load all three Divide and Conquer tiers. When you are comparing against another brand, make sure you are comparing single grate to single grate.

Mass Is What Makes a Long Cook Boring

AMP firebox and divided charcoal basket

Four hundred pounds of ceramic is not heavy by accident. That mass absorbs heat and radiates it back into the chamber, which is why a kamado settles into a temperature and holds it while a thin steel smoker swings with the weather. The multi-piece firebox absorbs thermal expansion, and the divided basket lets you bank fuel to one side or sift good charcoal from spent ash.

On an overnight brisket, the practical difference is the number of times you get up to check it. That is the whole argument for ceramic, and it scales with the size of the body.

The SloRoller Turns the Dome Into a Smoke Chamber

The SloRoller is a hyperbolic insert that sits under the cooking grate and redirects airflow into rolling, recirculating waves instead of letting smoke rise straight past the food. On a 24-inch grate, where evenness is harder to achieve than on an 18, that redistribution earns its keep. It is included with this model.

The SloRoller is a low-and-slow tool only. Kamado Joe specifies a 150 to 300°F working range for the insert and states that running it above 300°F can damage it. Take it out before you roast hot, bake pizza, or sear. The grill is rated to 750°F; the insert is not.

The Four Parts You Touch on Every Cook

A 24-inch ceramic dome is a lot of weight to lift and a lot of volume to regulate. The Series III hardware exists specifically so neither becomes your problem.

Kontrol Tower top vent

Dual-adjustment cast aluminum that holds its air setting through dome opening and closing. On a chamber this size, finding your setting takes longer, so not losing it every time you check the food is worth more here than on a smaller grill.

Air Lift hinge

Carries most of the dome weight through the arc. On a 24-inch ceramic lid that is the difference between a two-hand heave and a one-hand lift, and it is the single feature most people notice first when they move up from a smaller kamado.

Built-in dome gauge

Fahrenheit and Celsius, with the smoking, roasting, and searing bands printed on the dial. You read a zone rather than interpret a number, which shortens the learning curve on a grill this size.

Pull it, empty it, done. No reaching up into a 24-inch firebox with a tool between cooks. A clear lower air path is also what lets the vents actually control the fire, so this is a performance part as much as a convenience one.

Measure Before You Order

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that causes problems. The 51.6-inch width includes the side shelves, so fold them down for a narrower parked footprint. At 55.1 inches tall, check any pergola beam, soffit, or low overhang above the intended spot.

Then think about the route. Four hundred pounds of crated ceramic does not go up stairs or across soft ground easily. Confirm the path from curb to final position before delivery day, and have at least two people plus an appliance dolly ready. The carrier will contact you to schedule an appointment; standard service is curbside or driveway, and moving the crate to the patio is not part of it.

Who the Big Joe III Is For

  • Cooks who feed a crowd. If whole packers, multiple butts, and full rib racks are your normal, the capacity stops being a luxury.
  • People who want one cooker to smoke and sear. SloRoller in for low-and-slow, out for a 750°F sear, on the same grill.
  • Buyers with the patio space and the access. A 51.6-inch wide, 55.1-inch tall grill needs a real spot, and a 400-pound delivery needs a real route.
  • Anyone who would rather not pay separately for accessories. SloRoller, 3-tier racks, charcoal basket, cart, and shelves are all in the box.

If you mostly cook for two to four people, the Classic Joe III does the same job in a smaller footprint. If you want this capacity with push-button ignition and app control, look at the Big Joe Konnected Joe. If you are building into an outdoor kitchen island, order the Big Joe III Standalone instead.

Common Questions About the Big Joe III

How much bigger is the Big Joe than the Classic Joe?

The Big Joe is a 24-inch cooking surface at 450 square inches; the Classic Joe is 18 inches at 250 square inches. That is 80 percent more main-grate space. Assembled, the Big Joe III is roughly 8 inches wider, 6 inches taller, and about 126 pounds heavier.

How does the Big Joe III compare to an XL Big Green Egg?

The Big Joe III runs 450 square inches on the main grate against 452 on the XL EGG, so on capacity they are effectively level. The difference is what comes in the crate: the Big Joe III includes ceramic heat deflectors, the 3-tier Divide and Conquer racks, the SloRoller, a cart, and folding side shelves, while the EGG is typically finished with separately purchased accessories. Our Kamado Joe vs Big Green Egg comparison covers both brands on specifications, cost, and warranty terms.

Will Classic Joe accessories fit the Big Joe?

No. Covers, grates, deflectors, soapstones, and pizza attachments are sized per body. Order Big Joe versions for this grill. If you are unsure which you are looking at, call us and we will check the part number before you buy.

How is Series III different from Series I and II on the Big Joe?

All three share the 24-inch ceramic body, slide-out ash drawer, built-in thermometer, and AMP firebox. Series II adds the Kontrol Tower top vent, Air Lift hinge, wire mesh fiberglass gasket, and heat deflectors in the box. Series III adds the 3-tier Divide and Conquer system, the SloRoller, a stainless steel charcoal basket, the premium cart, and aluminum side shelves.

Can one person move it?

Not safely. At 406.3 pounds the grill rolls on its cart over smooth level ground once assembled, but uncrating, lifting the ceramic, and any change of level need at least two people and proper equipment.

Does it use more charcoal than a Classic?

A larger chamber takes more fuel to bring up to temperature, so a short high-heat cook on a Big Joe costs more charcoal than the same cook on a Classic. On long low-and-slow sessions the difference narrows, because ceramic mass is doing most of the work once the grill is stable. Our fire-building lesson covers stacking a basket for a long burn.

Does buying from an authorized dealer matter?

Yes. Kamado Joe's warranty terms state that purchasing through an unauthorized dealer voids coverage. Smokeforges is an authorized Kamado Joe dealer, so your Lifetime Limited Warranty stands. Registration is required for the warranty to apply.

How will it be delivered?

On a pallet by scheduled LTL freight, with curbside or driveway service as standard. The carrier contacts you to arrange an appointment. Inspect the shipment before signing, note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, and keep the packaging until assembly is finished.
