What Is the Konnected Joe?
The Konnected Joe is Kamado Joe's 18-inch ceramic charcoal grill with a built-in digital control system. An Automatic Fire Starter element lights the charcoal at the push of a button, a digital Kontrol Board sets the target temperature, and a Kontrol Fan regulates airflow to hold it. Range is 225 to 700°F, and the Kamado Joe app monitors and adjusts the cook from your phone once the fire is lit.
Cooking space is 250 square inches on a 2-tier Divide and Conquer system. It weighs 216.1 pounds and includes the Kontrol Tower top vent, Air Lift hinge, slide-out ash drawer, heat deflectors, one meat probe, a steel cart, and folding aluminum side shelves. It requires mains power.
The reason people talk themselves out of a ceramic kamado is almost always the same one: the overnight cook. Chimney starters, a fussy first hour while the ceramic comes up to temperature, and getting up at 2am to check the vents. The Konnected Joe removes that objection without removing the charcoal.
Big Green Egg does not offer a factory-integrated digital ignition and fan system, so an EGG with a third-party controller is the nearest equivalent. For how the two brands compare on the fundamentals — cooking area, included accessories, cost of a complete setup and warranty terms — read Kamado Joe vs Big Green Egg.
Three Parts, Working Together
Kamado Joe did not bolt a thermometer onto a normal grill. The ignition, the control board, and the fan are one integrated system built into the ceramic body. Understanding how they hand off to each other is the fastest way to judge whether this grill earns its premium over a standard Classic Joe.

01 · Automatic Fire Starter
A heating element built into the base of the firebox ignites the charcoal at the push of a button. No chimney starter, no lighter cubes, no newspaper, no waiting for coals to ash over before you can load the grate.

02 · Digital Kontrol Board
Mounted at the front of the base. It sets your cook mode and target temperature, tracks meat probes, sends alerts, and graphs the chamber over a 24-hour window so you can see whether your fire drifted overnight.

03 · Kontrol Fan and the app
The fan in the base generates airflow through the chamber and regulates it against your target, which is what actually holds the number steady. Once the cook is running, the Kamado Joe app takes over for monitoring and adjustment from anywhere.
Automatic When You Want It, Manual When You Do Not
Two operating modes ship on this grill, and the second one is the reason experienced kamado owners take it seriously.
Automatic cook mode hands temperature management to the fan. Set a target on the board or in the app and let it hold. This is the overnight-brisket mode and the reason most people buy this grill.
Classic mode shuts the fan off and gives you a conventional Kamado Joe run purely on dampers — Kontrol Tower top vent above, bottom draft below. You are not locked into the electronics, and if the power goes out mid-cook the charcoal keeps burning and you simply fall back to manual vent control. If you are new to running a fire by hand, our fire-building video lesson covers charcoal stacking, lighting and vent settings.
The Ceramic Hardware Has Not Been Compromised
Adding electronics to a grill is only a good idea if the grill was good to begin with. The Konnected Joe keeps the hardware that makes a Kamado Joe worth owning.

Kontrol Tower top vent
Holds its air setting through dome opening and closing, so the manual half of your airflow does not reset every time you look at the food. The fan handles the rest from below.

Air Lift hinge
Carries most of the ceramic dome weight through the opening arc, which makes the lid a one-hand job. The ceramic body also has integrated side handles, which matters when a 216-pound grill has to come off a pallet.

2-tier Divide and Conquer
Two foods at different heights, and therefore different temperatures, in the same cook. Note that this is two tiers, not the three you get on a Series III — that is the main capability trade in this grill.
What You Give Up Against a Classic Joe III
This is the comparison that decides most purchases, and it is worth being direct about it. Both grills are the same 18-inch body with the same 250 square inches of cooking space. They diverge on what fills the dome.
| Push-button ignition | Konnected Joe only |
| Fan-held temperature and app control | Konnected Joe only |
| Meat probe monitoring | Konnected Joe only |
| SloRoller smoke chamber | Classic Joe III only |
| 3-tier Divide and Conquer | Classic Joe III only |
| Stainless steel charcoal basket | Classic Joe III only |
| Maximum temperature | 700°F vs 750°F on the Classic III |
| Requires mains power | Konnected Joe only |
Put simply: the Classic Joe III is the better pure smoker, and the Konnected Joe is the easier grill to live with. There is no version that has both. Our Classic Joe III breakdown covers that model in full if you are weighing the two.

Electronics on a Grill: the Fair Question
Putting a control board and a fan on a charcoal cooker raises a reasonable worry — what happens in year five when a component fails? The honest answer is that Kamado Joe designed the Konnected Joe around replaceable modules and publishes a step-by-step guide for each one.
The fire bowl, ceramic base, wire harness, front and rear modules, lid switch, and element plug are all documented as user-serviceable parts. There is also a component troubleshooting guide that traces a fault back to the specific part before you order anything. We host every one of those documents on the Konnected Joe product page, and as an authorized dealer we can source the correct part rather than a generic substitute.
Who the Konnected Joe Is For
- People who want charcoal flavor but have been put off by fire management. This is the grill that removes the objection.
- Long-cook cooks. Brisket, pork shoulder, overnight smokes — the fan holding the number while you sleep is the entire value proposition.
- Anyone who would rather their phone told them the meat was ready. Probe alerts and a temperature graph beat standing at the grill.
- Households with outdoor power. If there is no practical way to get an outlet to the grill's location, this is not the model for you.
Common Questions About the Konnected Joe
Can I start the grill from my phone?
No, and that is by design. You power the grill on at the unit, ignite the charcoal with the Automatic Fire Starter button, and set your temperature on the Kontrol Board. From that point the app monitors and adjusts the cook remotely.
Does it need to be plugged in?
Yes. The Kontrol Board, the Automatic Fire Starter, and the Kontrol Fan all draw power. Plan a weather-appropriate outdoor outlet within reach of the grill and follow the electrical guidance in the owner's manual.
What happens if the power goes out mid-cook?
The charcoal keeps burning. The Konnected Joe is a ceramic kamado with a sealed dome, so you fall back to managing the fire on the Kontrol Tower top vent and bottom draft the way you would on any Classic Joe. The manual covers manual operation.
How is this different from the Classic Joe III?
Same 18-inch body and 250 square inches. The Konnected Joe adds push-button ignition, the digital Kontrol Board, the Kontrol Fan, and app control, but uses the 2-tier Divide and Conquer system and tops out at 700°F. The Classic Joe III has no electronics but adds the 3-tier rack system, the SloRoller smoke chamber, a stainless charcoal basket, and a 750°F ceiling.
How does the Konnected Joe compare to a Big Green Egg?
Big Green Egg does not offer a factory-integrated ignition and fan system, so the closest equivalent is an EGG paired with a third-party temperature controller. On the fundamentals the two brands are close on cooking area, and the larger difference is what ships in the crate. See our Kamado Joe vs Big Green Egg comparison for specifications, cost, and warranty terms side by side.
Konnected Joe or Big Joe Konnected Joe?
Identical digital system. The difference is body size: 18 inches and 250 square inches here, versus 24 inches and 450 square inches on the Big Joe version. The Big Joe version also runs to 750°F against 700°F on this model.
How many meat probes can I use?
The Kontrol Board takes up to three. One probe is included; additional probes are sold separately. If you regularly run two or three pieces of meat at once, order the extras with the grill and save a second shipment.
Can I build it into an outdoor kitchen?
Yes, with planning. Kamado Joe publishes a built-in guide specific to the Konnected Joe covering the requirements that differ from a standard kamado install, including running power to the unit. The guide is linked on the product page.
Does buying from an authorized dealer matter?
Yes, and on a grill with electronic components it matters more than usual. Kamado Joe's warranty terms state that purchasing through an unauthorized dealer voids coverage. Smokeforges is an authorized Kamado Joe dealer, so your Lifetime Limited Warranty stands. Registration is required for the warranty to apply.
