The Part of a Stone Fire Pit Nobody Sees — and the Part That Decides Whether It Lasts.
Stone and masonry crack when they take heat directly. The Heavy Gauge Fire Ring puts a wall of American steel between your fire and your hardscape, with a vented profile that lets air move behind it. Drop it into a stone surround, or set it on a patio and burn in it as-is.
Ohio Flame redesigned and reintroduced the Fire Ring for 2023, built to the same gauge and standard as their fire bowls. It solves two different problems depending on how you use it — as the structural liner inside a masonry fire pit, or as a standalone ring you set down and light.
Formed from 3/16-inch American steel across the 24, 30, and 36-inch sizes, stepping up to a full ¼-inch wall on the 42-inch ring.
The ring's faceted geometry leaves gaps between the steel and a surrounding stone wall, creating air baffles that help heat dissipate instead of loading the masonry.
Set it into a stone or block surround as a permanent liner, or place it on any non-combustible surface and use it as a traditional open fire ring.
Flange outer and inner diameters plus a rough-in diameter are published for each size, so a mason can build the opening before the ring arrives.
Ships in the natural steel finish, which patinas and darkens over time, or accepts the high-heat paint of your choice if you want a specific color.
Assembled in the USA by a local craftsman from domestically sourced steel, in the same shop as the Ohio Flame fire pit line.
A plain cylinder dropped into a stone pit sits flat against the masonry, and every BTU you burn goes straight into the stone. Ohio Flame gave this ring a faceted profile instead. Where the flat faces meet the curve of a stone wall, air gaps open up along the perimeter — baffles that let heat move rather than accumulate against the block.
The second half of the design happens at the base, and it is on you. If you add air inlets at the bottom of your stone wall as you build, the ring draws from below and pushes combustion cleaner. Same wood, noticeably less smoke drifting into the seats.
Build to the published rough-in diameter, drop the ring in, and let the flange sit on the top course. The baffles handle heat; bottom air inlets handle smoke.
Set it on pavers, concrete, or stone and burn. No surround required — the 12-inch wall contains the fire on its own.

Rough-in diameter is the number your mason needs. All published figures carry a manufacturing tolerance of plus or minus 0.3 inches.

Build your masonry opening to the published rough-in diameter for your size, allowing for the plus or minus 0.3-inch tolerance. The flange is designed to rest on the top course and conceal the joint.
Leave air inlets at the base of the stone wall as you lay it. Ohio Flame notes this improves smoke dissipation, and it is far easier to build in now than to retrofit later.
If you are not building a surround, set the ring on pavers, poured concrete, or stone. Keep it off decking, turf, and anything combustible, and check local clearance codes.
These run 60 to 132 lbs. Plan for two people on the 36 and 42-inch rings, and set your final position before the surround goes up around it.
