The grate pivots on a swivel mount, allowing the operator to rotate the entire cooking surface away from the fire for loading and unloading food, then swing it back into position over the coal bed for cooking.

This swivel functionality addresses a practical challenge with open-fire grilling: placing and removing food directly above active coals. Rather than reaching over the heat source, the cook rotates the grate to an accessible position off to the side, arranges the items, and swings the grate back over the fire. This is particularly useful when working with heavier cuts or when loading multiple items at once, as it eliminates the need to maneuver food over a hot firebox.
