Wood-burning or gas
Start with fuel type, then compare dimensions, heat area, materials, ignition, and installation requirements on each product page.
The right fire pit depends on fuel, setting and how you'll gather around it. Wood-burning fire pits give the classic crackle. A propane fire pit table or natural gas fire table lights instantly, leaves no ash, and gives you a ledge for drinks. Portable propane fire pits go wherever the evening does.
Shop American-steel wood fire pits from Ohio Flame, handcrafted GFRC concrete gas fire pit tables from Studio Nisho, gas fire bowls and fire tables from The Outdoor Plus, radiant portable fire pits from Howl Campfires, and fire pit grills from Cowboy Cauldron and Arteflame. Fire Pits FAQ
Is a propane or natural gas fire pit table better?
Propane gives you placement freedom, since the tank can hide inside or beside the table. Natural gas means no tank swaps, but it needs a gas line installed by a qualified professional. Many gas fire pit tables we carry, including Studio Nisho models, come in either fuel, so choose by how often you'll use it and whether a line is practical.
How far should a fire pit be from the house?
Follow the clearances in the manufacturer's manual and your local fire code, because they vary by appliance and fuel. Large gas fire features can need significant clearance; the Studio Nisho Rhea's published burner diagram calls for 120 inches of vertical clearance. Our guide on where to put a fire pit covers placement.
What's the best fire pit if I don't want smoke?
A propane or natural gas fire pit produces no wood smoke or ash. If you want real wood, a smokeless fire pit design reduces smoke by burning it off with secondary air, as long as you burn dry, seasoned wood.
Can I cook on a fire pit?
Some fire pits are built for it. Cowboy Cauldron fire pit grills and Arteflame grills include cooking surfaces. Others, such as Howl portable propane fire pits, aren't designed for cooking, according to the manufacturer. Check the product page.
Do gas fire pits put out a lot of heat?
They put out strong radiant heat up close. A BTU rating measures fuel input, not how warm a seated guest feels, so seat people within a few feet and add a windbreak. For dining areas or spread-out seating, pair the fire pit with a patio heater.
