The Liberty Standard Base, the Ohio Flame model our customers order most.

Which Ohio Flame Fire Pit Do People Actually Buy?

Short answer

The Liberty with the Standard Base. Across our Ohio Flame catalog it is the model that leaves the shelf more often than anything else, and it is not close. The Patriot is second.

The Liberty is a wood-burning steel fire bowl welded onto a four-sided steel base, handcrafted in Northeast Ohio from thick carbon American steel. It comes in five diameters from 24 to 48 inches, in 3/16 inch steel on the smaller sizes and 1/4 inch on the two largest. There are no moving parts, no burner, no electronics, and no finish to reapply.

Ohio Flame builds several handsome things. The artisan bowls by Matt Skillman are sculptural. The Patriot is simpler and sits lower. But the Liberty keeps winning, and after enough of these orders the pattern is clear enough to write down.

Why This One Keeps Winning

Three reasons show up over and over in the conversations we have before people order.

1. It reads as architecture, not as patio furniture

The Liberty's bowl sits on a squared, four-sided base with hard vertical lines. Against a stone patio, a poured concrete pad, or a modern hardscape, it looks like it was specified rather than purchased. That matters to people building an outdoor room instead of filling a corner of the yard.

2. The steel is the product

There is no coating to fail, no powder finish to chip, no liner to burn out. The Liberty ships in what Ohio Flame calls a Natural Steel Finish, which is raw steel straight off the mill. Left outside, it forms an iron oxide patina that darkens over months and then largely settles. That patina is the protection.

People who have already replaced one thin imported fire bowl tend to understand this immediately. People buying their first one usually need to see the weight spec before it lands.

3. Nothing about it can break

A gas fire feature has a burner, an igniter, a valve, a regulator, and a pan. Each is a thing that can stop working in year four. The Liberty is a welded steel bowl on a welded steel base. Ohio Flame backs the structural steel and welds with a lifetime warranty against rusting through. Screens, grates, hinges, paint and finishes are not covered, and altering the product voids that coverage.

Handcrafted, not warehoused Ohio Flame builds these by hand in Columbiana, Ohio. Build and ship windows move with the season and with size. Call 833-777-2962 before you commit to a date and we will confirm the current window on your diameter.

Four Bases, One Bowl

The Liberty bowl is the same across the line. What changes is what it stands on, which changes the sight line and the height of the flame relative to seated eye level.

Ohio Flame Liberty fire pit with the standard four-sided base Standard Base The four-sided squared base. Most grounded of the four and the one people order most. Reads cleanly against rectilinear hardscape.
Ohio Flame Liberty fire pit with the hollow base profile Hollow Base Open sides lighten the visual mass and let the base read as negative space. Good where the pit sits in the middle of an open lawn or deck view.
Ohio Flame Liberty fire pit with the curved base profile Curved Base Softens the whole silhouette. Pairs better with planted borders, gravel, and landscapes that are not built on straight lines.
Ohio Flame Liberty fire pit with the angled base profile Angled Base The most sculptural of the four. Tapered planes catch light and shadow through the day, so it holds interest even unlit.

How to Pick Your Diameter

Ohio Flame Liberty steel fire pit bowl shown against a plain background
  • 24 in. Townhome patios, courtyards, and small decks. Four chairs pulled close. Uses less wood per evening.
  • 30 in. The size most people land on for a standard suburban patio. Six chairs around it without crowding.
  • 36 in. Where the fire starts feeling like a real bonfire. Needs room to breathe and clearance on all sides.
  • 42 and 48 in. Estate yards, ranch properties, and commercial patios. Heavy enough that placement is a one-time decision, so set it where it stays.

Two practical notes. Leave enough clearance that people can walk a full circle without stepping over the rim. And plan for a non-combustible surface underneath, since ash falls through the rain drain and raw steel can transfer rust marks to light-colored hardscape.

Living With the Patina

Ohio Flame natural steel patina finish detail
Natural Steel Finish: raw mill steel that oxidizes into a protective patina.

The first few weeks are the part that surprises people. A new Liberty arrives looking like bare metal, goes orange as the surface oxidizes, then deepens toward dark brown over the following months. That orange stage is normal and it is not a defect.

After that, there is nothing to do. No sealing, no repainting, no covering it for winter. Clear the ash when it builds up, keep the rain drain from clogging, and leave it where it stands.

Common Questions

Is the Liberty better than the Patriot?

Neither is better, they are shaped for different rooms. The Liberty puts the bowl on a taller squared base and reads more architectural. The Patriot has a lower, flatter, edgeless profile and sits closer to the ground. Both use the same grade of thick carbon American steel and carry the same lifetime warranty on the steel and welds.

Will it rust through?

The Natural Steel Finish oxidizes on the surface by design, and that patina is what protects the steel underneath. Ohio Flame backs the structural steel bowl and welds with a lifetime warranty against rusting through. Screens, grates, hinges, paint and finishes are not covered, and altering the product voids the manufacturer warranty.

Can I put it on a wood deck?

No. These fire pits are intended for outdoor use on a hard, level, non-combustible surface such as concrete, stone, or pavers. Ash falls through the rain drain and the steel radiates heat downward. Ohio Flame specifically advises against combustible surfaces such as wood decking.

Does it come with a cover or a screen?

The Liberty ships with the integrated Rain Drain plus a 4 inch round blocking plate and centering tee for closing the drain off. Lids, fire rings, log grates and fire tools are sold separately, and we stock them.

How long does it take to arrive?

These are handcrafted to order rather than pulled from a shelf, so the window moves with the season and the size. Call 833-777-2962 before ordering if you have a date to hit and we will confirm the current build window.

Where is it made?

Ohio Flame builds in Columbiana, in Northeast Ohio, using American steel sourced primarily from Ohio mills. Fabrication materials and packaging are also purchased from American companies.
